Supplies and Materials Needed

  • An empty egg carton (cardboard is best)
  • Seed-starting potting soil
  • Seeds of your choice (e.g., basil, lettuce, marigolds)
  • A spoon (for filling soil)
  • A tray or plate (to catch water if using a cardboard carton)

  1. Pick an empty egg carton and empty the eggs. A cardboard egg carton is ideal because it’s biodegradable and can be planted directly into the soil.

  1. Poke a small hole in the bottom of each egg cup to allow excess water to drain. Use a toothpick, skewer, or sharp object for this step.
  2. Spoon seed-starting potting soil into each cup, filling them about three-quarters full. Leave a bit of space at the top to make room for the seeds and watering. Lightly pat the soil down without compacting it too much.
  3. Place 1–3 seeds in each cup, depending on the size of the seeds. Follow the instructions on the seed packet for planting depth—some seeds need to be lightly pressed into the soil, while others should be covered with a thin layer of soil.
  1. Gently water the soil in each cup to moisten it. Be careful not to overwater, as the soil should be damp but not soggy. If the water pools in the tray, make sure the cups are draining properly.
  2. Put the egg carton in a warm, sunny location, such as a windowsill, where the seeds will get plenty of light. If you don’t have enough natural light, consider using a grow light to ensure the seeds sprout successfully.
