Onion powder is a popular seasoning that adds a rich, concentrated onion flavor to a variety of dishes. Whether you’re making soups, sauces, marinades, casseroles, or even adding a touch of flavor to salads and appetizers, onion powder is a kitchen staple.
Unlike fresh onions, onion powder has a long shelf life, making it an excellent option for adding that classic oniony taste without the hassle of chopping or peeling. Plus, turning fresh onions into powder is a fantastic way to preserve them and reduce food waste.
We are going to show you how to make your own onion powder at home using an air fryer. It’s a simple process that allows you to enjoy the full flavor of onions in a more convenient, long-lasting form.
Ingredients
- 3 red onions
Equipment
- Air Fryer
- Spice Grinder, Coffee Grinder, or Mortar and Pestle
- Knife
- Cutting Board
Onion Powder Recipe
- Peel the onion and slice it thinly using a vegetable peeler or slicer. Lightly squeeze out excess moisture and blot with a paper towel.
- Preheat your air fryer to 200°C (400°F). Spread the onion slices evenly in the air fryer basket and then Cook for 5 minutes at this temperature.
- Then, reduce the heat to 130°C (265°F) and cook for another 5 minutes. Stir the onions, lower the temperature again to 90°C (194°F), and continue cooking until the onions are golden and crispy, which should take around 25 minutes.
- Once done, allow the onions to cool completely.
- Then, grind the dried onions in a coffee grinder until fine.
And that’s it. You can now use your dry onions.
