I never thought I’d try making my own Vaseline, but curiosity got the best of me. Vaseline has been my go-to for so many things—chapped lips, makeup removal, and keeping my skin moisturized. I use it constantly! However, I wanted to try looking for a natural alternative.

The reason? While Vaseline is the classic, trusted name in petroleum jelly, it’s also highly comedogenic (pore-clogging) because mineral oil is one of its main ingredients. That’s when I decided to create a homemade version.

Homemade Vaseline is a safe, natural, and effective alternative to the petroleum-based original. This natural jelly soothes the skin, won’t clog pores, and is completely petroleum-free. The best part? It works just as well, if not better, than the store-bought version!

Beeswax Furniture Polish Recipe

Here’s a bit more information on both ingredients.

Beeswax

Beeswax is used in several home and beauty products. We also make beeswax leather conditioner with our wax, for example.

In skincare, beeswax acts as a breathable barrier on the skin, shielding it from environmental irritants like wind and pollution while locking in moisture. Unlike synthetic barriers, it allows the skin to stay hydrated without feeling suffocated. Packed with vitamin A, beeswax also supports skin renewal, helping to exfoliate and reduce acne, making it an invaluable addition to natural skincare routines.

Coconut Oil

Fractionated coconut oil is fantastic. It’s been treated to stay liquid and is skin-safe (you’ll find it in many cosmetic recipes). Not to mention, it’s food-safe and won’t go rancid like certain vegetable oils over time, making it perfect for cutting boards.

How to Make DIY Petroleum Jelly

  1. Place the coconut oil and beeswax in a glass container.
  2. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each interval, until fully melted.
  3. Add the olive oil to the glass container and stir in.
  4. Pour the mixture into your final container and allow it to harden.

And that’s it. You have made an alternative to petroleum jelly.

With these uses, it’s easy to see why we needed to make this product. Here’s an article that discusses other uses of petroleum jelly around the household in greater detail. There are even survival uses for vaseline you may not have thought about.
