This DIY rose petal candle is an easy project that’s perfect for gifting, decorating, or simply enjoying a little candle-making at home.

How to Make DIY Candle With Rose Petals

  1. Prepare your container. Attach the candle wick to the center of your container using a wick sticker or heat-resistant adhesive. Place a wooden skewer, chopstick, or wick holder across the opening to keep the wick straight.
  2. Melt the wax. Using a double boiler, slowly melt your candle wax over gently simmering water. Stir occasionally until completely melted. Use a thermometer and follow the wax manufacturer’s temperature recommendations. Never heat wax directly over an open flame.
  3. Add fragrance. For a rose-scented candle, add a candle-safe rose fragrance oil at the temperature and concentration recommended by the wax and fragrance manufacturers. Some essential oils can be used in candles, but not all are suitable for burning.
  4. Pour the wax. Carefully pour the melted wax into your prepared container, leaving a little room at the top. Make sure the wick stays centered as you pour.
  5. Let the candle cool. Allow the wax to cool and harden completely without moving the container. Follow your wax manufacturer’s recommended curing time before the first burn.
  1. Trim the wick. Once the candle has set, trim the wick to approximately 1/4 inch.

How to Care for Your Homemade Candle

A little candle care can help your homemade candle burn more evenly and last longer.

Before each use, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch. This helps control the flame and reduces excess soot. During the first burn, allow the wax to melt toward the edges of the container, following the manufacturer’s recommended burn time.

Avoid burning candles for more than four hours at a time, and stop using them when approximately 1/2 inch of wax remains at the bottom, or sooner if your container manufacturer recommends it.

Always place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from curtains, drafts, children, and pets. Never leave a burning candle unattended.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you put flower petals in candles?

Dried flower petals are popular in decorative candles, but we don’t recommend placing them directly into the wax of a candle you plan to burn. Rose petals and other dried botanicals are combustible and can catch fire when they contact the flame.

For a safer alternative, use dried rose petals to decorate the outside of the candle container or the gift packaging. Remove any loose decorations before lighting the candle.

What can I add to homemade candles?

You can customize homemade candles with different wax types, candle-safe fragrance oils, and compatible candle dyes. Rose, lavender, and vanilla are popular fragrance choices.

Avoid adding dried flowers, herbs, glitter, or other decorative materials that aren’t specifically tested and approved for candle use. Even natural ingredients can create fire hazards when added to burning candles.

Is it cheaper to make your own candles or buy them?

Making candles at home can be cheaper if you make several at once and buy wax, wicks, and fragrance in larger quantities.

However, the initial purchase of equipment and supplies can make your first few candles more expensive than store-bought options. Homemade candles can still be worthwhile if you enjoy crafting or want to make personalized gifts.

Is making candles safe?

Candle making can be a safe hobby when you use the proper equipment and follow basic precautions. Always melt wax using a double boiler or other manufacturer-approved heating method, monitor the temperature, and keep children and pets away from hot wax.

Choose containers designed for candle making, use properly sized wicks, and test your finished candles before gifting or selling them. Never leave melting wax or a burning candle unattended.
