A bandana is one of the most versatile survival tools you can carry. It’s lightweight, can be hung from a beltloop, backpack or stuffed in a pocket. There are so many uses for a bandana, it’s going to shock you. That’s why you’ll want to have a few in your bug out bag, stored in the glovebox of your car or in your prepping stockpile.

The following are just some of the ways you can use bandanas in survival situations.

1. Filter Water

Fold it a few times to strain out debris, leaves, or small particles from water before boiling or purifying. Note, this is not a true filter. This is only taking out the chunky bits.

2. Sling or Tourniquet:

In a medical emergency, a bandana can be used as a makeshift sling for an injured arm or as a tourniquet to stop bleeding. Use a twig/stick to twist the bandana tight enough to stop the bleeding.

3. Char Cloth:

If made of 100% cotton, the fabric can be charred and used as char cloth to catch sparks from a flint.

4. Signal Flag:

Brightly colored bandanas can be waved or tied to a branch as a visual signal for rescuers. If you only have one, tear the bandana into strips for several markers.

5. Sun Protection:

Use it to cover your nose and mouth in dusty environments, or for warmth in cold weather.

7. Makeshift Bandage:

Fold or roll it up to wrap around a wound, protecting it from dirt and helping stop the bleeding.

9. Cordage:

Twist or braid it into a temporary rope or cord for tying down items or securing gear.

10. Sling Weapon:

Tie a stone into the center of the bandana and use it as a slingshot to scare off small animals or hunt.

11. Pot Holder or Glove:

Fold it thick enough to handle hot objects like a cooking pot or pan over the fire.

12. Cooling Wrap:

13. Tourniquet Padding:

Place it under a tourniquet strap/rope/belt to prevent skin damage or increase comfort.

14. Improvised Padding:

Wrap it around blisters, sore spots, or as a cushion for your hands when carrying heavy objects.

15. Fishing Net:

Tie it between sticks or your hands and use it to scoop up small fish or bait in shallow water.

16. Camouflage:

Use it to cover bright or reflective gear to blend into your surroundings. Obviously, the bandana will need to be a neutral color to blend in.

17. Improvised Diaper:

In emergencies, it can work as a quick diaper for infants.

18. Cordage for Shelter Building:

Tie together branches or poles to make a small survival shelter.

19. Hot Compress:

Soak it in hot water and use it as a compress to soothe sore muscles or injuries.

Wrap it around your water bottle in hot weather to slow down warming or in cold weather to help insulate it.

22. Headlamp Diffuser:

Tie it around a headlamp to create a softer light in camp at night.

23. Bug Repellent Infuser:

Dip it in a natural insect repellent like citronella or tea tree oil and wear it around your neck to keep bugs away.

24. Bait Bag for Fishing:

Tie small pieces of food inside and use it to attract fish while fishing. It’s a way to chum the water without losing your chum.
