Tortillas are simple flatbreads that work well with many dishes. Made with wheat or corn flour, they’re easy to prepare at home using just a few ingredients.

Traditionally, tortillas are made by kneading dough, rolling it out thin, and frying each one individually, which can be time-consuming. This recipe simplifies the process, making it quicker and easier to enjoy fresh homemade tortillas.

How to Make Tortillas from Scratch

  1. Pour the water into a bowl to knead the dough. Pour in the salt, pour in the olive oil. Add the flour and knead the dough immediately. The dough should not stick to your hands. Allow the dough to rest in the bowl for 30 minutes under cling film.
  2. Divide the dough into 6 portions. Roll each part into a ball and flatten the ball into a tortilla with your hand. Brush the blanks with olive oil.
  1. Stack the pieces and roll the whole stack into a layer the diameter of your pan. We have an 11-inch diameter pan. You get 6 tortillas in one layer.
  2. Heat up the skillet, lay out all the tortillas and fry the bottom product until the bottom product has appetizing spots, about 1 minute.
  3. Flip the entire stack over and remove the top already cooked tortilla. It is cooked, one side of it is toasted and the other side is pale but not raw.
  4. Turn the stack over and remove the tortillas until all are cooked.

And it’s as simple as that. Now you have homemade tortilla.

Recipe Tips

Add dried aromatic herbs such as oregano, garlic powder or a little nutmeg to the dough to give the homemade tortillas flavor.

Replace the water with kefir, milk or yogurt for a soft and tender texture.
