I shop at both Home Depot and Lowe’s, and I’ve learned that each store has its strengths. Sometimes Lowe’s has exactly what I need, but certain purchases make me head to Home Depot first.
It’s not necessarily because Home Depot is always cheaper. Some of my favorite tool brands are sold there, and I like having access to certain products, repair supplies, and equipment rentals that make home projects a little easier.
Here are 14 things I’d rather check at Home Depot before heading to Lowe’s.

1. Power Tools
When I’m shopping for power tools, Home Depot is usually my first stop because of brands like Ryobi, Ridgid, and Milwaukee. Whether I’m looking for an affordable cordless drill or something for a more demanding project, I like having several options and the chance to find tool-and-battery bundles on sale.
2. Electrical and Plumbing Supplies
When something breaks around the house, I want to find the right replacement part without making three different stops. Home Depot has a wide selection of outlets, switches, pipes, fittings, valves, and other repair supplies, making it a convenient place to shop for smaller fixes.
3. Husky Hand Tools
For basic tools like screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, and socket sets, I’d consider Husky before spending more elsewhere. Home Depot carries a large selection, and many Husky hand tools come with a lifetime warranty, which is useful for tools I expect to keep for years.
4. Gardening Supplies
I could easily spend an afternoon browsing Home Depot’s garden center, especially when spring planting season arrives. Between vegetable plants, herbs, potting soil, planters, and gardening tools, it’s a convenient place to pick up several things at once, although I always check plants carefully before buying.
5. Tool and Equipment Rentals
I don’t see much point in buying an expensive machine for a project I’ll probably tackle only once. Home Depot’s rental department is worth checking for pressure washers, floor sanders, concrete mixers, and other specialty equipment, depending on local availability.
6. Lumber and Decking Materials
Whether I’m replacing a few trim boards or planning a larger outdoor project, Home Depot is one of the first places I’d check for lumber and decking supplies. I like being able to compare pressure-treated boards, composite decking, railings, and fasteners, although I’d inspect the lumber carefully and compare prices before buying.
7. Vinyl Plank Flooring
If I were updating a kitchen, laundry room, or another busy area, I’d look at Home Depot’s LifeProof flooring. The brand offers plenty of vinyl plank styles, and being able to pick up flooring and installation supplies in one place makes planning the project easier.
8. Concrete Mix and Supplies
For smaller concrete projects, such as setting fence posts or repairing a walkway, Home Depot is a convenient place to shop. I can pick up Quikrete mixes, mixing tubs, trowels, and other supplies without visiting several stores.
9. Outdoor Power Equipment
Before buying a new leaf blower, string trimmer, or lawnmower, I’d check Home Depot’s selection. If I already owned cordless tools from a brand it carries, I’d especially look for compatible outdoor equipment so I wouldn’t have to spend extra money on batteries and chargers.
10. Hampton Bay Light Fixtures
Replacing an outdated light fixture is one of those small home improvements that can make a noticeable difference. Home Depot’s Hampton Bay collection includes ceiling lights, vanity fixtures, and outdoor lighting, so I’d browse it before spending more on a similar style elsewhere.
11. Adhesives and Sealants
Whether I’m fixing loose trim or resealing a bathtub, I want a product made for the job. Home Depot carries plenty of construction adhesives, wood glues, caulks, and sealants, making it easier to compare options for different materials and repairs.
12. Halloween and Christmas Decorations
Home Depot is one of those stores I enjoy browsing as the holidays approach, especially for large Halloween decorations and outdoor Christmas displays. Some of its seasonal products sell out quickly, so I’d rather check early than wait until the decorations I want are gone.
13. Appliances During Major Sales
I wouldn’t buy a refrigerator, dishwasher, or washing machine without comparing prices at both stores, but I’d definitely check Home Depot’s promotions first. Holiday discounts, appliance bundles, and rebates can make a difference, although I always factor in delivery, installation, and haul-away fees before deciding.

When I decide to use Behr paint, I go to Home Depot. The brand offers several interior and exterior paint lines at different price points, and I like being able to compare colors, finishes, and coverage before starting a project.
