Most of us walk into the grocery store with a list, grab what we need, and head straight to checkout. But depending on where you shop, you may be able to get a few extras for free.

The catch is that many of these perks aren’t advertised, and sometimes you have to ask an employee or check your store’s app to find them.

Not every grocery store offers these freebies, and policies can vary by location, but here are 14 things worth asking about on your next shopping trip.

Free Samples of New Products

Ever wondered whether a new snack, drink, or food product is worth buying? Some grocery stores offer samples so customers can try something before committing to the full-size package.

You might find them at promotional displays, special tasting events, or demonstrations hosted by food brands. Ask an employee whether the store has any sampling events scheduled, particularly on busy shopping days.

Free Cheese Samples

If you’re buying cheese from a specialty counter, you may be able to taste a small piece before deciding what to purchase. Some stores with staffed cheese departments offer samples of certain varieties, particularly when helping customers choose between different options.

This can be especially useful when you’re considering an expensive cheese you’ve never tried. Ask the person working behind the counter whether sampling is available.

Free Fruit for Kids

If you’re grocery shopping with little ones, check the produce department before you start filling your cart. Some grocery stores offer complimentary bananas, apples, or oranges for children to snack on while their parents shop.

It’s a nice little perk that can make grocery shopping with kids a lot easier. Look for a designated fruit basket or ask someone in the produce department whether the store participates.

Free Cookies From the Bakery

The bakery department may offer more than fresh bread and pastries. Some grocery stores give children a complimentary cookie, although the practice varies by chain and location.

If you don’t see a sign advertising free cookies, it doesn’t hurt to ask the bakery staff politely. Just don’t assume every store offers them.

Free Stickers for Kids

Sometimes the smallest things make children the happiest, and grocery store stickers are a perfect example. Trader Joe’s is particularly known for handing out stickers to young shoppers, and some other stores keep them at the register or customer service desk.

They won’t save you money on groceries, but they might make shopping with kids a little more enjoyable. Ask your cashier whether they have any available before you leave.

Free Candy or Small Treats

Some grocery stores occasionally offer small treats for children, especially at the checkout counter or customer service desk. Depending on the location, that might mean a piece of candy or another little surprise.

These aren’t guaranteed freebies, and many stores don’t offer them. But if you’re shopping somewhere that regularly gives children treats, it’s worth asking whether anything is available.

Free Deli Meat Samples

Buying a new type of turkey, ham, or specialty deli meat can be a gamble when you don’t know how it tastes. Some staffed deli counters may offer a small sample of a product you’re considering purchasing.

It’s not a universal policy, but asking for a taste before ordering can help you avoid spending money on something your family won’t enjoy. Availability depends on the store and its food-handling rules.

Free Coffee or Water

A few grocery stores offer complimentary coffee or drinking water as a courtesy. You might find it near the entrance, customer service area, or another designated spot in the store.

It’s not nearly as common as other grocery store perks, but it’s worth looking around or asking if you’re shopping at a store with a café or customer lounge. Keep in mind that most in-store cafés charge for drinks.

Free Wi-Fi

If you’ve ever struggled to load a digital coupon or pull up your grocery list in-store, free Wi-Fi can come in handy. Many grocery chains provide complimentary internet access so shoppers can use their apps, check prices, and browse digital offers.

Look for the store’s guest network in your phone settings or ask customer service whether Wi-Fi is available. It’s especially helpful if your mobile signal is unreliable inside large buildings.

Free Birthday Treats

Your birthday might come with a little something extra from your favorite grocery store. Some supermarket loyalty programs offer birthday rewards, which may include a free bakery item, snack, or other eligible product.

These offers usually require you to sign up in advance and add your birthday to your account. Check your grocery store’s app or rewards program to see whether birthday freebies are included.

Free Grocery Items Through Rewards Programs

Some grocery store loyalty programs occasionally offer completely free products through digital coupons or special promotions. Depending on the store and current offers, you might find a free snack, beverage, pantry item, or another grocery product.

Kroger-family stores and other supermarkets have run free-item promotions, although the specific offers and schedules can change. Before heading to the store, check the digital coupon section of your app to see what you can claim.

Free Product Coupons

Sometimes grocery stores offer manufacturer coupons or promotions that aren’t displayed throughout the aisles. Customer service representatives or brand representatives may be able to point you toward available coupons, including ones that cover the full price of a promotional item.

You can also check the store’s app for digital offers that make certain products free after discounts. These deals aren’t always available, but they’re worth looking for before paying full price.

Free Coloring Pages and Crayons

If you’ve got young children, ask whether your grocery store offers any activities for kids. Some locations provide coloring sheets, crayons, or small activity pages, particularly during holidays or special family events.

You might find them near the checkout area, customer service desk, or a children’s activity station. It’s a small perk, but it can help keep little hands busy while you’re shopping.

Free Ice for Seafood Purchases

If you’re buying fresh fish or seafood, ask the seafood counter whether they can provide ice to help keep your purchase cold on the way home. Some grocery stores will pack seafood with ice or provide a little extra at no additional charge.

This is especially useful if you have a longer drive or need to make another stop before getting home. Just remember that seafood still needs to be kept properly chilled, so an insulated cooler is a smart idea for longer trips.
