Here’s a guide on how to restore your cast iron.
Supplies You’ll Need
You will need the following ingredients to clean the cast iron.
- White vinegar
- Steel wool pad
- Baking soda
- Liquid dish soap
- Clean dishcloth or paper towel
- Cooking oil (canola, vegetable, or avocado)
Step 1 – Soak In Vinegar Solution
Mix equal parts of white vinegar and hot water in your sink and soak the rusty skillet for no longer than an hour. Vinegar helps break down the rust.
Step 2 – Scrub
After soaking, scrub the cast iron with a mixture of dish soap and baking soda using steel wool or a scrub brush. This may require some effort for heavily rusted areas.
Step 3 – Rinse
Rinse the cast iron with warm water to wash away the cleaning agents.
Step 4 – Dry Thoroughly
Dry the cast iron completely with a dish towel or paper towel. Removing all moisture is crucial to prevent further rusting.
Step 5 – Season
To prevent future rust and create a non-stick surface, you must season the cast iron. Coat it lightly with cooking oil using a paper towel, covering all parts, including the handle. Bake the oiled cast iron in the oven at 400 degrees on the bottom rack for an hour.
Following these steps, your cast iron skillet will be rust-free and as good as new, ready for many more years of cooking delicious meals.
