Most of us grew up watching Disney movies on VHS, rewinding our favorite scenes and watching the same movies over and over again. Some of us still have those old tapes tucked away in a closet or sitting on a shelf, and maybe our kids are even watching the same Disney classics we loved growing up.

But those old VHS tapes might be worth more than just the memories. While most Disney movies on VHS aren’t particularly valuable, certain early releases, unopened copies, and special editions have sold for hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

Before you donate that old Disney collection or pass it along to someone else, here are a few you might want to hold onto.

Beauty and the Beast

Beauty and the Beast is one of the Disney movies most frequently mentioned when people talk about valuable VHS tapes. Its familiar Black Diamond packaging has become a favorite among nostalgic collectors, although most used copies are still relatively common.

According to The Independent, one copy reportedly sold for more than $10,000 at a charity auction in 2024. That’s an exceptional result, potentially influenced by the charitable event, rather than a realistic estimate for the average tape sitting in someone’s attic.

The Little Mermaid

If you have an early copy of The Little Mermaid, take a closer look at the cover. The original 1990 VHS artwork became controversial, and later versions featured different packaging, making the earlier design recognizable to collectors.

In December 2023, a professionally graded 1990 VHS copy signed by Disney cover artist Corey Wolfe sold for $174 at Heritage Auctions. The signature and professional grading matter, since ordinary copies with the original artwork generally sell for much less.

Robin Hood

Disney’s animated Robin Hood was among the earlier movies released through the Walt Disney Classics home-video collection. Those older editions can be more interesting to collectors than the later versions that were widely available throughout the 1990s.

In January 2024, a professionally graded 1985 Robin Hood VHS sold for $74 at Heritage Auctions. That’s a reminder to check the release year and packaging rather than assuming every copy of the same movie has equal value.

Spirited Away

Spirited Away isn’t a traditional Disney-produced movie, but Disney handled its American home-video distribution. Certain promotional VHS editions have become interesting collectibles, particularly because they weren’t ordinary retail releases.

One professionally graded 2003 Spirited Away promotional demo tape sold for $1,312.50 at Heritage Auctions in June 2023. That’s an impressive price for a VHS tape, although the special promotional edition and grading help explain why it attracted such strong interest.

The Black Hole

Disney’s 1979 science-fiction movie The Black Hole might not be the first title that comes to mind when you think of valuable Disney VHS tapes. However, certain early home-video editions have become desirable to collectors who appreciate unusual packaging and vintage Disney memorabilia.

In June 2023, a limited 1983 gift-wrapped VHS edition sold for $375 at Heritage Auctions. The professionally graded copy included its original decorative gift box and ornament, making it considerably different from a standard VHS release.

Castle in the Sky

Like Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky is a Studio Ghibli film that Disney distributed on home video in the United States. Certain promotional copies are much harder to find than the standard versions sold to consumers.

A professionally graded 2003 Castle in the Sky demo tape sold for $239 at Heritage Auctions in June 2023. Its sealed promotional status is an important part of its collector appeal.

Disney Cartoon Classics: Pluto

Not every collectible Disney VHS features a full-length animated movie. Some of the studio’s older cartoon compilations have also attracted interest, especially when they’re early releases in unusually good condition.

A professionally graded 1984 Disney Cartoon Classics: Pluto VHS reportedly sold for $101 at Heritage Auctions. While that’s not an enormous amount, it’s worth remembering that some of Disney’s shorter cartoon collections can be just as interesting to collectors as its better-known movies.

Disney’s Sing-Along Songs: Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah

Disney’s Sing-Along Songs collection was a familiar part of childhood for many families, featuring popular songs and animated clips. Older releases from the series can occasionally attract collectors, particularly when the packaging is well preserved.

One professionally graded 1986 Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah Betamax copy reportedly sold for $104 at Heritage Auctions. This particular sale involved a Betamax tape rather than VHS, so it’s not directly comparable to the more common VHS editions, but it’s another example of how older Disney home-video formats can attract interest.
